The Beauty Edit: Blonde vs Brunette

Blonde vs brunette… do blondes really have more fun? Are brunettes perceived as more intelligent? I’ve been a blonde since I was fourteen and had my first experience of highlights… but six months ago I decided the expense and maintenance was just too much and time being so precious these days, having four hours to sit in the hairdressers chair just wasn’t feasible. So off to George Northwoods London salon with the wonderful Amy who worked her magic and gave me a sensible medium… rich brown with some blonde balayage thrown in for good measure. I loved it! And no black roots after two weeks. But then a shocker… the greys! I didn’t even know I had grey hair. I had to go back after three months as I would with blonde hair and have the roots touched up. Turns out being a brunette can be just as time consuming and just as expensive. Yes I could have used a home colour but I am a salon addict and would never trust myself with my hair, it means too much to me!

Turns out I missed the blonde and last week it was back to the salon for me, foils back in my hair and bleached up. I feel like my old self again. I think blonde and I think fun, flirty, beachy, laid back and youth. Yet most of the women I style crush on are brunettes. Brunette says elegance, style, maturity, sensible, sensual and sexy. In fact some of those words were exactly what my husband said when I went dark, that I looked more stylish and sexy. I don’t think any of these are necessarily true – but they were the feelings I had when being that hair colour.

Hair means so much to a woman, it is part of our identity. Team blonde or team brunette which ever side you pick be sure sure you work that look and enjoy everything that comes with it… meanwhile I will continue to wish I was a cali beach bum whilst fighting my black roots and depleted bank balance…
